Located in the Pine Creek Wilderness, this trail is great for hikers and horseback, with great scenic views of livestock, wildflowers, green grasses, and a quiet running stream. The northern end of Secret Canyon follows a historic stone shrine and when heading south meets with the Espinosa trail, where (during wet seasons) it also features a large swimming hole, great "dispersed camping" options, and free flowing streams. This beautiful and challenging trail offers much for the outdoor enthusiast, but with little shade it can be rather difficult during the hotter months. The best time to go is after substantial rain when water flow is heavy, or in the spring and late fall months.
Any water found on the trail is not considered potable, so hikers should be prepared with plenty on hand. On mild days, it is easily possible to go through 4 liters (1 gal) of water per person. This back country, wilderness trail does not often offer cell phone service, so come ready for a rural experience.
