Italy Pass Trail


This trail separates from the Pine Creek Pass trail near Honeymoon Lake. Before reaching Italy Pass, the trail goes past Granite Park and Chalfant Lakes. After crossing Italy Pass, the trail descends past Jumble Lake to reach Lake Italy, shaped like Italy's boot like outline. Italy Pass and the decent of Hilgard Branch to reach Bear Creek and the John Muir Trail is not recommended for stock.

  • Wilderness permits are required year round for overnight trips
  • Day use does not require a permit.
  • May 1 through November 1 quota limits visitors to 8 people per day.

Water: Water from creeks, lakes and springs should be treated before drinking.
Restroom: Please Leave No Trace. Bury human waste away from water sources.

General Information

Directions:

From Bishop go north on Hwy 395 approximately 12 miles and go west on Pine Creek Canyon Rd. Drive to the end of the road and park in the dirt lot near Pine Creek Pack Station. Walk through the pack station, the trail begins along the creek.

Golden Trout are present in Granite Park Lakes 1 and 2, Upper and Lower Chalfant Lakes hold Rainbow Trout.
