Angeles National Forest Chilao Visitor Center

The Chilao Visitor Center is located on State Highway 2, about 27 miles north of the city of La Canada, CA (off Interstate 210). At an elevation of 5,280 feet, it is nestled in a beautiful portion of the Angeles National Forest and Admission is free. The Center offers an introduction to the Forest through a variety of exhibits, trails and activities.

Nature trails leading from the building plus over 20 indoor exhibits introduce visitors to themes of national forest management, history of the San Gabriel Mountains, forest wildlife and recreational opportunities.  For more information about the Center, conditions and activities call (626) 796-5541. The Chilao Visitor Center is located in the Chilao Recreation Area. Once you visit this beautiful site, you'll understand why it was chosen years ago as the summer home of the Gabrielino Native Americans.

Check the location of Chilao on the relief map to get a "bird's eye view" of the spectacular peaks and deep canyons that surround this area.

Learn the history of this portion of the San Gabriel Mountains and the current recreational opportunities it provides. Learn to recognize some of the local wildlife, and play the "Who walked here?" game to see if you can identify the footprint of some of the local animals. Hike the trails that surround the Visitor Center, and enjoy the sights, sounds and fresh air of this great place!
