Caribou-Targhee National Forest Current and Recent Projects

Developing Proposal

  • Camp Ta Man A Wis Improvements

    Within the Camp Ta Man A Wis permitted area, the project would authorize the construction and maintenance of a trail, deconstruction of a volleyball field, and construction of tent platforms.

Under Analysis

  • Amendments to Land Management Plans Regarding Sage-grouse Conservation

    The Forest Service is considering amending its land management plans to address new and evolving issues arising since implementing sage-grouse plans in 2015. This project is in cooperation with the USDI Bureau of Land Management.

  • Ashton/Island Park Eight Allotment Range Grazing Analysis

    Analyze and disclose the effects of livestock grazing activities on the Fogg Butte, Ripley Butte, Bootjack, Grandview, Gerritt Meadows, West Lake, Antelope Park and Fall River Cattle and Horse (C&H) Allotments.

  • Caribou Prescribed Fire Restoration Project

    To improve the health and resiliency of vegetation communities and habitats in fire-dependent ecosystems across the portion of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest covered by the Caribou Revised Forest Plan.

  • Crooked Creek Restoration

    The project intends to remove a no-longer regulated or needed irrigation diversion ditch that diverts and runs parallel to Crooked Creek as well as realign a portion of Forest Service Road 178.

  • Crow Creek Pipeline Project Lower Valley Energy

    Construct a fifty mile, eight inch natural gas pipeline between Bear Lake County and Afton, Wyoming. Approximately 20 miles of this pipeline would be on Forest Service lands.

    Construct a fifty mile, eight inch natural gas pipeline between Bear Lake County and Afton, Wyoming. Approximately 20 miles of this pipeline would be on Forest Service lands.

  • Grand Targhee 2018 Master Development Plan Projects

    Adjust SUP/operational boundaries; install, replace, and realign lifts; glade, grade, and develop terrain; construct, improve and reclaim roads; expand snowmaking; build guest service facilities, construct trails; build recreation activity zones

  • Jordan Canyon Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project

    The proposal is to treat up to 490 acres within the project area. Treatments proposed to reduce hazardous fuels include commercial timber sale, non-commercial thinning treatments, and prescribed fire with hand/aerial ignition (broadcast and piles).

  • Kelly Canyon-Indian Creek Grazing Analysis

    The purpose of this analysis is to reauthorize livestock grazing and to ensure management is conducted in a manner that maintains and/or moves the natural resources of the project area toward desired conditions and Revised Forest Plan objectives

  • Caldera Snow Coach 5-yr special use permit

    This proposal would authorize a 5-year special use permit to Caldera Snow Coach Tours to operate snow coach and cross-country ski tours on existing groomed snowmobile trails during the winter seasons.

  • Cottonwood Gallery Forest Habitat Protection Snake River Fences and Corral

    Project proposes to exclude cattle from a portion of the South Fork of the Snake River riparian area to improve habitat and comply with a change in management.

  • Diamond Creek Forest Management

    Treat up to 4,722 acres of vegetation through regeneration harvest, thinning, non-commercial stand improvement, and prescribed fire. Additionally, relocate approx. 3 miles of existing system roads and opening an inactive gravel pit for road material.

  • Husky 1 - North Dry Ridge Mine

    An EIS is being prepared to address a mine and reclamation plan submitted by Itafos Conda, LLC for the proposed Husky 1 North Dry Ridge Phosphate Mine, approximately 16 miles northeast of Soda Springs, Idaho.

  • Lead Draw Recreation Project

    Improve the recreational experience for all users of the Lead Draw area by providing recreation infrastructure, trailhead signage, and rerouting the 1.7 mile single track Lead Draw Trail.

  • Montpelier Soda Springs Timber Stand Improvement Project

    This project proposes to implement timber stand improvement activities such as precommercial thinning, weeding and cleaning, pruning, and girdling in 1,887 acres of previously harvested stands.

On Hold

  • Rainey Creek Vegetation Restoration Project

    Use prescribed fire and mechanical thinning to improve the vegetative/brush diversity and resilience within juniper and mountain mahogany. Reduce hazardous fuels adjacent to private property and along the Rainey Creek road for public safety.

  • Targhee National Forest Lynx Analysis Units

    Utilize existing protocols and data to establish Lynx Analysis Units (LAUs) on the Targhee portion of the Forest. The LAUs and identified lynx habitat will be subject to the Northern Rockies Lynx Management Direction.

Cancelled

  • Buffalo TSI

    The project would precommercially thin ~3900 acs to reduce/prolong the overall susceptibility to mountain pine beetle attacks & crown fires in previously harvested areas. The project would also provide for a variety of products now & in the future.

  • Crestline Trailhead Relocation

    The proposed action is to obliterate the current Crestline Trailhead and quarter mile access road, Forest Road 333. The trailhead would be re-constructed in a new location immediately adjacent to Forest Road 001 (Scout Mountain Road.

  • Diamond Creek Reconnect Project

    The Caribou-Targhee National Forest (CTNF) is seeking comments on a proposal to improve 0.8 miles of Diamond Creek below Stewart Canyon. Project is roughly 20 miles due east of Soda Springs Idaho.

  • Eastside Trailhead Improvements

    Relocate trailheads or perform heavy maintenance at the Bear Gulch, Coal Mine, Pete Creek & Trail Creek trailheads to improve safety and reduce erosion/ sediment loading to streams. Expand surface area and add barriers if needed.

  • Freeman Ridge/Husky 2 Exploration Plan

    Exploration Drilling of 967 holes to gather information about phosphate reserves on portions of two Federal Phosphate Leases and three off lease areas. Overall disturbance is 168.0 acres.

  • Husky 1/North Dry Ridge Mine Haul Road Run-on Control Ditches

    The Forest Service is proposing to approve a proposal from Itafos Conda LLC to construct three run-on control ditches with culverts on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest adjacent to the boundary of the Husky1/North Dry Ridge phosphate mine

  • Island Park Office Conveyance

    Dispose of the Island Park office with approximately 2 acrs of land as outlined in the Facilities Realignment and Enhancement Act of 2005. Also dispose of all housing, associated garages, outbuildings, and an abandoned sewage lagoon.

  • Lake Canyon Trail (FS#206) Project

    Reroute approx. 3/10 of a mile at head of canyon putting it on a grade of 5 to 10%. Close and rehab old segment to eliminate eroding section of trail. Reroute 2/10 of a mile at mid trail to eliminate rock hazards.

  • Montpelier Aspen Retention Project

    A variety of low impact vegetation treatments (such as hand thinning) designed to remove sub-dominate conifers in existing aspen stands. Goal is to improve aspen stands by stimulating regeneration and subsequently improve wildlife habitat.

  • Proposed Targhee Revised Forest Plan Amendment

    Proposes to amend the 1997 Revised Forest Plan for the Targhee portion of the Forest to address direction for "old-growth" and "late-seral" forested vegetation, snags and wildlife habitat for select cavity-nesting species.

  • Soda Springs Aspen Retention Project

    A variety of low impact vegetation treatments (such as hand thinning) designed to remove sub-dominate conifers in existing aspen stands. Goal is to improve aspen stands by stimulating regeneration and subsequently improve wildlife habitat.

  • Targhee Prescribed Fire Restoration Project
